Writer of the Month!
The very talented Perth creative, Beth Wilkinson is our writer of the month for March! We asked her a few questions about her poem, Fingernails that she published with us last month and, asked her a bit about her journey as a 'newbe' to the writing scene.
When asked about her interest in writing, Beth stated that, "I have always been interested and inclined to write imaginatively, ever since primary school and further discovered the different mediums of writing in high school."
For her, writing is a way for her to explore her own thoughts and feelings in a way that she only properly understands.
"When my thoughts are deafening and my emotions are overwhelming, I write. I explode my mental disarray onto a page. I re-write. I edit. I write some more. I create something I am proud to show to those I love.
She described her writing style as heavily descriptive and metaphoric. She is inspired by the natural world and the human condition, and uses strong imagery and figurative language to create works that blend fantastical elements with real, human experiences.
When asked about the meaning of her poem, Fingernails, she stated that the work is up for interpretation. "I would rather people draw their own conclusions and thoughts than for me to give them mine. "
Finally, we asked her for some advice for beginner writers, she said to simply begin,
"The beginning always seems so incredibly daunting, but once you do, the door swings wide open and you never know what awaits you at the other side. "
